Personal leadership, a life choice!
How do you live the life you envision? How do you avoid being lived by others? Personal leadership requires clarity about what you find important and the willingness to steer accordingly. There are four components that form the basis for this.
Self-awareness
Self-awareness is the starting point of personal leadership. You examine what you can do, what you want and what has value to you. With those insights, you evaluate choices more easily. You see more quickly which option fits the direction you have in mind.
Motivation
Next is the question of what gets you moving. Knowing when you are intrinsically motivated, or when you need additional outside support or reinforcement. You use those insights to put yourself into action. Even when something is against you. Motivation then becomes not a matter of waiting, but of consciously turning it on.
Self-Management
Self-management is all about action. You take control of your opportunities and responsibility for your choices. In other words, it’s about “leading” yourself to achieve your own goals. Just knowing what you want and can do does not produce results. You make a difference by consistently demonstrating behaviors that contribute to what you want to achieve. This is how you build, step by step, the life you want to shape.
Emotional intelligence
Many elements of personal leadership coincide with emotional intelligence. Both are about awareness of your emotions, influencing your behavior and paying attention to others. After all, you never work in isolation from your environment. By recognizing emotions and consciously directing relationships, you increase your influence. You create circumstances in which you and others can flourish.
