Profiling during a job interview

For some, a job interview is cake, for others uncomfortable and a big challenge. Yet this is the moment when you put yourself down as you want to be seen. You get one chance at a first impression. So, valuable to start the conversation sharp. With these points, you’ll be sharp in the job interview.

The place of your dreams (right?).

You’ve been invited for an interview with a potential new employer, congratulations! That inspires confidence. And then? The content of such an interview depends on the position. With the points below, you will step in well prepared, regardless of the role.

1. Prepare.

Immerse yourself in the company, position and industry. See what skills and attributes are required and make sure you have an example for each point that shows that you can or want to learn it. Also think about your motivation. Why do you want to work here and what do you add?

2. Know yourself

Know what qualities you bring and what experiences show how you work. Your areas for improvement are just as relevant. What are you running into and how do you deal with them? Honest reflection makes a stronger impression than a story that sounds too slick. After all, authenticity sells better than fancy talk.

3. Present

The STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) helps to clearly tell what you accomplished. You describe the situation, your task, the action you took and the result. This provides structure and makes your examples convincing and concrete.

4. Show enthusiasm

Show that you are motivated by asking questions and actively listening. You’re not just sitting there to show your best side. You’re also exploring whether this company is a good fit for you. Do they fit with you? Do they show the same interest toward you?

5. Practice and show

In addition to knowledge and skills, personal characteristics play a big role. Know what characteristics characterize you and name them with confidence. Talk about them with friends or other people you trust. By saying it out loud, you make it approachable and put yourself clearly during the interview. Tell it like it is.

Nerves in control

If you experience a job interview as challenging, realize that much of it stems from projection. Tension often arises because you focus on what others may think. You project expectations that you cannot control. By writing down these thoughts, you see clearly where your uncertainty is. Use that as a basis for questions. What seems like fear sometimes just turns out to be a need. Does this organization fit what you think is important?

With good preparation, a realistic self-image and an open attitude, you increase the chances of an interview that is right for both sides. Good luck!
